The Hero of Waterloo Hotel

The Hero of Waterloo Hotel

Spookiest aspect? It’s haunted! The ghost of Anne Kirkman – who died centuries ago when her notorious husband pushed her down the stairs into the stone cellar– moves around furniture, creates creepy breezes and generally creates ghostly havoc.
The look: Authentic Australian. This convict built hotel was established 1843 and still has the original bricks made by convicts. Downstairs the cellar holds other relics of a bygone age. It’s like stepping back in time.
The soundtrack: Live music from Wednesday to Sundays with pub bands pelting out Celtic foot stampers to classic rock. Get up and dance or kick back and relax.
Signature drink: A frothy beer. There’s eleven delectable tap beers from Carlton to James Squires (pints cost from $6.60 to $8) and nine bottled beers to select from. Who’s buying?
The bar snacks? Are award winning! Good old fare pub grub from Bangers and Mash with sauté red cabbage, red wine jus and roasted onion ($13.50) to traditional fish and chips ($16).
Best for: Meeting interesting local characters, discovering our fascinating history, impressing international guests (and having a scary night out!).
