NEW MELBOURNE BAR: Post Office Hotel
Intimate, chic and enchanting this century old building’s revamped new look is filled with refracted light courtesy of some strategically placed mirrors and laser cut floating ceilings. The original timber ceilings with ornate rose flourishes remain intact while the 10 metre tower, domed buttresses and lofty chimneys add some nineteenth century charm.
Inside, order from the pristine marble bar sitting beneath a massive gantry with an impressive display of wine or head outdoors to the triangular beer garden. Making the most of the small space, clever design work ensures plenty of tiered nooks, benches, ramps and steps to settle on. Steel panels with laser cut images enclose the space and dramatically change colour, but the star attraction is the beer garden’s very own wood-fire oven.
Food wise, share some antipasti or go for a gourmet pizza. Tempting toppings include the confit Creole duck with tomato, oyster mushroom, asparagus, watercress, thyme and mozzarella. And before leaving stop off at the old-style post office bar and send someone a postcard. The hotel will stamp and post any postcard or letter you pop into their box in keeping with the buildings history as a Post Office.

Bar Secrets Melbourne - now a handy iPhone app
Here it is - all the insider information on Melbourne's hippest bars right at your fingertips. Finally released lat weekend, the new Bar Secrets Melbourne guide has been converted to an iPhone app, so you'll never be at a loss for places to visit in town on a Saturday night.
With the usual Bar Secrets info available in a clear, accessible format; there is a host of other cool features as well. Click the 'Nearby' button to find out which bars are closest to you and in what order, then make the most of the GPS and get directions on how to get there from where you are. Call the venue, visit their website or email it to a friend and get them to meet you there. You can even add the bar's details to your address book!
