The Red Hummingbird

The Red Hummingbird

Bar whereabouts: it’s not down an obscure alley, but it’s still typically coy and cryptic in the way Melbourne bars love to be. The only clue that you’ve arrived is a red birdcage hanging above the doorway.
The look: dark and moody with altar-style lighting, a fireplace and rectangular ottomans.
Great outdoors: boasts a de rigueur rooftop terrace, but this one’s quite a beauty, with hangingbasket chairs, woven hyacinth stools and tropical palms. All that’s missing is a pool.
Quench the thirst with: cocktails, wine and boutique beers, including Knappstein and James Squire. But nothing makes friends like the jugs of Pimm’s and dry spritzer or sangria to share ($25 each, serves four).
Signature drink: Breakfast Martini, featuring Grey Goose Le Citron vodka, grapefruit marmalade, limoncello and blood-orange juice ($14.50).
Best for: balmy evenings with mates or dates. In a word (or three): an urban resort.
