NEW MELBOURNE BAR – Bar Etiquette.
A quirky new local lounge for Brunswick bar hoppers to explore, focusing on
primo beers and micro-brews without the posh price-tag. There’s no confusion
over tap prices with pots here, pints and jugs costing the same regardless of
the boutique brew you in opt for. Share a jug of Trumer Pils or scan the mostly
local bottled selection including like Red Hill’s Golden Ale and Charlotte’s Heffeweizen as
well as a few imports.
A haphazard arrangement of rooms, each a different mood, is a mix of recyled couches and art lined walls with idiosyncratic flourishes like plant filled bathtubs and used Japanese student exercise books. Wander from the rouge coloured front bar to a Chinese inspired sitting room or head to the homely, garage like room out back. With its fancy-free décor and cool lived-in vibe, Bar Etiquette feels just like your lounging at a mate’s place, except with boutique beer on tap! And although you won’t find any here, peckish drinkers can order in munchies from outside. There’s even a thoughtful collection of takeaway menus from local restaurants on standby behind the bar.
Bar Etiquette - 408 Sydney Rd, Brunswick. Phone: 9387 8343.

NEW Melbourne Cafe - Mitte
Take one former corner shop, add some home-made Bircher, a barista and furnish to taste, Mix well and before long, you’ll have a cosy backstreet café like Mitte that somehow feels like it’s always been there. There’s no overarching theme to the décor or the menu which features brunch and lunch favourites but it does namedrop some choice ingredients. Examples include the prosciutto toastie with D’Affinois brie ($9) and the Middle Eastern chickpea bake with Meredith fetta ($15). Meanwhile, the fruit salad ($10) with blood orange and lychee sounds more like a breakfast cocktail.
Mitte - 76 Michael St, Fitzroy North. Phone: 9077 7379.
